Participants of the conference were President Tran Dai Quang, Member of the Politburo; Mr. Vo Van Thuong, Member of the Politburo, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Central Commission for Communication and Education; Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thang, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Chairman of the Central Theoretical Committee, President of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics; Mrs. Bui Thi Thanh, Vice President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee; and heads of ministries, departments, An Giang Provincial Party Committee and People’s Committee.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thang mentioned that President Ton Duc Thang was born into a peasant family in Ong Ho Isle, My Hoa Hung Village, Dinh Thanh Canton, Long Xuyen Province (now Long Xuyen City, An Giang Province). He said that the late President held many important positions assigned by the Party and the State in his nearly 70 years of revolutionary activity. President Ton Duc Thang was a resilient and exemplary soldier, a respectful and close leader, who spent his whole life fighting for independence and freedom for his fatherland and for the happiness of the people, he emphasized. The late President was the first person to be awarded Sao Vang (Golden Star) Order and several prestigious awards and medals by the Party and the State. President Ho Chi Minh said: “Mr. Ton Duc Thang is a model of revolutionary virtue. He has lifelong integrity and has devoted his life to serving for the revolution and the people”.

An Giang Province was proud to be the birthplace of the excellent son, the exemplary Communist, and the famous leader of the Vietnamese revolution. In her presentation in the conference, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Vo Thi Anh Xuan said that the precious heritage left by President Ton Duc Thang for the Vietnamese people in general and for the An Giang people in particular were his high moral quality of the communist soldier; the chivalrousness of people from South Vietnam; his firm will and creativity; his sympathy and sociability with people and comrades; and his strong confidence in the victory of the revolution and his devotion to serving for people despite difficulties and hardships.

She affirmed that An Giang Province had the pride to give birth and raise a simple but noble man, who was President Ton Duc Thang. Studying and following the example of Uncle Ton, the Party Committee and the people of An Giang continuously united and made efforts to accomplish goals and tasks. Specially, in more than 30 years of the implementation of the renovation process initiated and led by the Party and under the light of resolutions of the National Party Congress over its terms, the province had unceasingly applied and concretized guidelines of the Party, policies and regulations of the State to be consistent with its characteristics and situation; and had achieved important results in all fields.

In the period of the implementation of the renovation, the 30-year journey (1986-2015) marked progresses of An Giang in all aspects, including politics, socioeconomics, security and defense. Its economy had experienced a rapid growth, transforming from a province facing a shortage of food with a rice yield of about 848 thousand tonnes (in 1986) into a current rice exporting province. The present rice output of An Giang reached to more than four million tonnes, making it to be one of provinces leading food production in the country. The economic structure shifted in a positive way, that gradually reduced the proportion of the agricultural sector and increased the share of the service sector. The province boosted the application of scientific and technological progresses in association with the reorganization of the value chain as a basis, with the highlight to be the Canh Dong Lon (Big Fields) model, which was also applied in various provinces. Besides, many high-technology farming models appeared and initially brought practical impacts. Life of the people had been improved. The network of schools were broadly covered. The grassroot-level health care network reached communes, wards, and towns to meet the heath care needs of people. The political security and social security were maintained. On the other hand, Party committees, the administration and the community took a good care of families receiving social assistance, the poor, and those living in difficult circumstances. People of the province took part actively in building great unity houses for the poor, giving their land to construct public roads and schools, repairing and building bridges, providing free food, and buying cars to offer free rides for patients.

An overview of the conference.

At the conference, participants and scientists made many presentations specialising on significant contributions of President Ton Duc Thang to the Vietnamese revolutionary cause in many areas. He founded and led the first workers’ union in Vietnam as well as contributed to revolutionary movement of the Vietnamese working class and to building the great national unity and international solidarity. The late President was a bright example of revolutionary morality. The great personality of President Ton Duc Thang made a countless significance to the current renovation process. Being proud of President Ton Duc Thang, an excellent son of the motherland, the provincial Party Committee and the people have been striving with determination to implement successfully the renovation cause, making the homeland be richer, more beautiful, and more modern./.
